The ukulele (or banjolele) is the perfect beginner instrument, as it’s relatively cheap and easy to get to grips with, especially for smaller hands. You’ll find yourself playing songs surprisingly quickly, and also learning the basics of music and musicianship.

Moreover, the uke is not just for beginners or children, but is very much a ‘proper’ instrument in its own right, which is extremely versatile and can sound amazing on a whole range of musical styles, from classical to reggae.

It can be an excellent stepping stone to another instrument such as the guitar, as the skills transfer well, but you will never outgrow the uke and it will reward a lifetime of study.

You’ll need your own ukulele – prices start from under £100, although the really cheap ones are best avoided. There are different sizes and tunings, so if you aren’t sure what to get, please ask for advice. You’ll also need a tuner. You won’t have to buy books, as we provide free support material for the lessons, such as chord diagrams and backing tracks.
